Abstract With the increasing relevance of robots in our daily lives, investigating the existing portrayals of robots in media has become crucial. This article aims to report the nature and findings of an exploratory study analysing the role of robot voices, speech, body sounds, and internal sounds in influencing a viewer’s perception of the robot’s intent. A set of qualitative interviews were carried out where participants responded to short video clips with and without sound from three robots from animated films. These responses were then analysed and compared with our sound analysis. The study aims to propose a set of considerations for creative artists and social interaction designers to encourage the devising of reliable sounds for robots in movies and video games.
