Project by Rurik Högberg and Siyu Wu
Abstract The paper explains the motivations, expectations, design, methods, and evaluation of a project producing a sonified version of the Chinese painting Along the River during the Qingming Festival (Qingming Shanghe Tu). The project provides a sonic dimension to a visual illustration aiming at providing a multimodal perception of the artwork to enrich its appreciation. Hence, this project has created an interactive soundscape incorporated in the scroll and was evaluated with user tests in two groups — with and without sound interactions.
The results show how the sound group more accurately identified what is depicted in the painting and spent longer time in the initial exploration of the artwork. Additionally, two themes could be identified for the group: a positive reception of the work and that sound enhances experience and interaction. The paper concludes that the project has enhanced the emotional and aesthetic experience as well as improved the comprehension and interpretation of the artwork.
