Abstract “
You discover a time machine in the Sound Forest that can travel to many possible futures. You step inside, explore the machine, and travel to a future you may never have imagined.”
We present an interactive sound installation that uses the concept of a time machine as a frame for the soundscapes of imagined possible futures. Developed on a prototype of the Sound Forest DMI, this installation uses sound, light and haptic feedback along with the soundscapes to create a playful, immersive experience that seeks to open people’s minds to possibilities and challenge pessimistic, dystopian preconceptions of the future. Evaluation of this iteration of the time machine installation shows the potential of novel, playful experiences to improve future outlooks. Finally, we discuss potential improvements to the installation for future iterations.
