Abstract Robots are a staple of sci-fi movies of all time periods, each having soundscapes that often define an era. In this paper we set out to explore the subconscious pre-emptive beliefs we have about how robots in cinema should sound. We used foleys to create the entire soundscape for three different eras of engines. A low-fidelity engine; a steam engine, a mid-fidelity engine; an electronic motor and finally a high-fidelity engine; our own prediction on how a robot in the future might present itself. With user testing we came to a conclusion that more research within this subject is needed for an overall image, but that users show tendencies to rate robots that they do not recognize higher.
