Project by Anna Neander and Xu Wang
Abstract We have designed a mapping for the Sound Forest installation where the users are the main creators of the final work. They can collaborate to shape multimodal sound and colorscapes, in an installation that involves both haptic, visual and sonic feedback. Users connect to the installation with their mobile phones and can select from a number of sound samples as well as combine these with different colors. The sample sounds are categorized and classified as abstract, nature, everyday and artificial. These categories were inspired by the suggestion that future soundscapes will hopefully allow sounds from nature to resurface as well as contain synthetic sounds that describe the relationship between man and machine. This project adds to previous work by allowing users to collectively create a cross modal sound-color scape in the installation, both at site and possibly also remotely. This will hopefully allow for new opportunities to design mappings for the installation, as well as to explore how users interact with it collectively. A small prestudy shows promising results, but is too limited to draw any major conclusions from.
