Abstract The soundscapes of environments of urban transportation means are oftentimes overlooked by frequent visitors. This paper aims to bring a broadened acoustic awareness to one such environment, namely the Stockholm metro and adjacent urban soundscape. While aiming to provide a sensitizing experience, users are invited to move through a small scale physical model of the Stockholm metro and urban environment, made available by the use of a motion capture system, and experience its surrounding present and imagined future sounds. With the larger goal of improving the sonic interaction experience, particularly in regards to the future soundscape, the choice of sounds was continuously iterated and discussed with a focus on their added value and mapping of physical dimensions to auditory ones. Through preference estimation with one test participant, an urban planner and public transport enthusiast, the model did bring acoustic awareness as intended. However, with the present and future sound being rather similar, the future rendering could have benefitted from using sounds less conforming to the present soundscape.
