Abstract In this report we present our interpretation of an auditory game for the Sound Forest
installation. The Sound Forest is a multimodal interactive installation in the Swedish
Museum of Performing Arts. It consists of 5 large strings that can sense when being
pulled, and can give feedback to the user via sound, light, and haptic vibrations. As
most Sound Forest applications so far have focused on abstract soundscapes, it
seemed an interesting challenge to focus this project on audio game design. From
an audio only game design perspective, the goal was to create a novel experience
by not focusing on environmental exploration, but on material exploration. Inspired
by various browser based physical simulation games, we set out to create an
auditory game based on discovering possible interactions between elements that
can be dropped in a virtual space. A prototype has been created in Python and
Supercollider, which allows players to experiment with the materials on one string.
Combinations of the available materials Wood, Water, and Fire, lead to various
auditory effects such as Burning, Boiling, or Splash.
