Project by Lisa Andersson López and Thelma Svenns
Abstract In this work, an installation
called “Dark Exploration” has been developed and described, which was a project
where a room was able to be explored in darkness, with the help of sound. The project
is using a Motion Capture camera system for tracking the user, and programming in
SuperCollider for simulating and mapping the music played. A song with multitracks
was chosen for this project where the specific instruments played in the song were
mapped to specific walls, which made the walls consist of a specific sound. Through
this, the subject could locate in the space and room by listening to the sounds
mapped to the walls, without using the eyes. The aim of the project was to explore
a space through sound and from that also being aware of one’s movements. To be able
to reach this aim, the experience should be done in darkness. The results showed
that it’s possible to explore a room in darkness with the help of sound, but that
the exploration should be done in a bigger space and having a better calibration
which gives a better tracking.
